Wet Leg, the Isle of Wight duo of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, injects a playful spirit into post-punk. Their 2021 single “Chaise Longue,” a viral track quoting Mean Girls, flips the genre’s typical deadpan irony by matching ragged guitar-and-drum grooves to wryly comic words. The self-titled debut album, issued in 2022, not only reached the top of the British album chart but also performed strongly worldwide, elevating Wet Leg to widespread attention and securing the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Teasdale, who sings and plays rhythm guitar, and Chambers, who sings and plays lead guitar, first crossed paths roughly ten years prior to the band’s formation while attending Isle of Wight College. After finishing their studies they stayed close, collaborating on each other’s music—Chambers contributing guitar to Teasdale’s reflective piano compositions and Teasdale adding vocals to Chambers’ material—while Chambers also joined the local band Plastic Mermaids. The notion of treating their music more lightheartedly struck them in 2019 after catching an Idles set at that summer’s Isle of Wight festival, prompting them to launch Wet Leg. Drawing from the Ronettes, Jane Birkin, Ty Segall, and Björk, the pair began crafting buoyant yet pointed songs as Teasdale picked up guitar. To complete the lineup they enlisted drummer Henry Holmes, bassist Ellis Durand, and guitarist-keyboardist Josh Mobaraki.

Throughout the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, Teasdale and Chambers gained extra time to develop Wet Leg material. In addition to writing and demoing tracks, they conceived, directed, and edited the video for “Chaise Longue.” Following their signing to Domino, the label released that song as the group’s first single in June 2021. Its tongue-in-cheek post-punk style and striking clip—partly shot inside Chambers’ mother’s home—propelled the track to viral status, generating millions of streams and peaking at number 27 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in the United States. That September the duo issued the disco-inflected follow-up “Wet Dream,” again paired with playful visuals. They closed the year with a short run of live shows and the release of two further singles, “Too Late Now” and “Oh No.” All four tracks appeared on the debut album.

Largely produced by Dan Carey, Wet Leg arrived in April 2022 and offset the band’s sardonic singles with more introspective, tuneful material. The record became a global breakthrough, appearing on charts in numerous territories, topping the charts in both the United Kingdom and Australia, and reaching number 14 in the United States. It also earned the group multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance for “Chaise Longue.”
