California-based garage rock revivalists The Lords of Altamont came together after the breakup of vocalist Jake "Preacher" Cavaliere’s earlier group the Bomboras, a band he had fronted following stints in roughly five other notable acts. Lineup changes marked the group’s history, yet by 2005 its roster had settled around Cavaliere, who doubled on organ, Spencer "The Dealer" Robinson on bass, Dave James, known as "Sir Lord Baltimore," handling guitar and vocals, Shawn "Sonic" Medina on guitar and also active with Ladykillers, and Thom Sullivan, billed as "Baron Von Ludwig," on drums. The band’s debut arrived in 2002 with the full-length To Hell with the Lords of Altamont. After inking a deal with Gearhead during fall 2005, the group saw Lords Have Mercy appear in the United States that November, while Fargo handled its European release. February 2006 brought a month-long European tour, after which the members traveled to Austin for South by Southwest.
