Biography
Formed initially as a trio in San Francisco, the Mantles blended sweet yet gritty indie pop with foundations in 1960s garage rock, paisley underground, and the C-86 sound. Frontman Michael Olivares and drummer Virginia Weatherby anchored the lineup alongside bassist Jermaine, who departed soon after the start. Bassist Matt Roberts and guitarist Drew Cramer came aboard next to complete the roster. Dulc-I-Tone Records issued the band's first release, the 2007 7" EP Burden/Walk with Me/The Garden/Trouble in the Streets. The mt.st.mtn label followed in 2008 with the single Secret Heart, which the Papercuts' Jason Quever produced. Siltbreeze Records put out the Mantles' self-titled debut album in 2009 after Greg Ashley handled recording duties. Mexican Summer then released the 2010 12" EP Pink Information, after which Drew Cramer exited and Justin Loney stepped in. Slumberland issued the next full-length, Long Enough to Leave, in 2013 following recording sessions with Kelly Stoltz. Keyboardist Carly Putnam joined at that point, as did bassist Matt Bullimore of the fellow Bay Area band Legs, who replaced the outgoing Matt Roberts. The group issued the mid-2014 single "Memory" and began preparing fresh material. Old friend Jason Quever returned to produce the resulting album, All Odds End, which Slumberland released in late 2015.
