Biography
The Mattson 2, a sibling duo featuring guitarist Jared Mattson and drummer Jonathan Mattson, first drew notice for their inventive fusion of jazz and psych-rock instrumentals. Active along California's Pacific Coast throughout the 2000s, the pair absorbed influences from the jazz lineage, 1960s experimental and surf rock, as well as 1970s fusion. Their recorded introduction arrived via the 2009 EP Introducing the Mattson 2. Subsequent releases broadened their range, including Feeling Hands in 2011, Star Stuff in 2017, and an ambitiously expansive reworking of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme. The brothers incorporated vocals for the first time on 2019's Paradise, which leaned into evocative sunshine pop.
Raised in San Diego, Jared and Jonathan Mattson began performing together during elementary school. By their teens they had developed into capable musicians who appeared regularly at local coffeehouses. Following high school they attended the University of California San Diego, completing bachelor's degrees in jazz studies. Around 2009 they established the instrumental duo the Mattson 2, whose style encompassed a wide blend of psych-infused jazz and rock. After issuing several EPs they delivered their first full-length album, Feeling Hands, in 2011. Star Stuff, a collaboration with Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi), appeared in 2017. Further illustrating their boundary-crossing approach, they released A Love Supreme in 2018, a trippy reinterpretation of saxophonist John Coltrane's landmark 1965 album. Paradise, the duo's collection of dreamy original compositions carrying comparable 1960s overtones, surfaced in 2019.
