Biography
Around the dawn of the millennium, vocalist Roman Kuebler launched the Oranges Band, an indie rock group based in Baltimore. Earlier, Kuebler had performed with the local indie outfit Roads to Space Travel, whose output included multiple releases on the Amish label plus a 7" single issued by Washington's DeSoto. Once that project ended, Kuebler pulled together the Oranges Band by enlisting ex-Wrong Button drummer Dave Voyles, guitarists Dan Black and Virat Shukla, and bassist Tim Johnston, whose prior experience included guitar work in Brickhead.
The ensemble issued its first recording, the Five Dollars EP on Morphius, in April 2000 and set out on the road almost at once. The decision reflected the members' conviction that live performance best captured music's fleeting immediacy and grace. Morphius followed with a second EP, Nine Hundred Miles of Fucking Hell, the next year. At roughly the same time Kuebler also teamed with D.C.'s bratty punk combo the Thumbs for a collaboration and tour.
While the Oranges Band devoted itself to writing and rehearsing material for a full-length album, Kuebler took the role of touring bassist with Austin, TX-based Spoon. Demos completed in April 2002 reached Lookout!, which signed the band without delay. Lookout! introduced them via the On TV EP in late 2002; the debut album All Around appeared in April 2003, and The World & Everything in It followed in 2005.
Tim Johnston exited on bass in 2006 and was succeeded by Faye Malarkey, formerly of Sick Sick Birds. With Lookout! no longer issuing new material, the group contracted to Kuebler and Voyles alone. Patrick Martin joined on bass and Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices) was added as second guitarist, yielding the 2009 release The Oranges Band Are Invisible.
