Biography
The Pheromoans, an English post-punk outfit, present sharply observational lyrics in a wry monotone vocal style atop aggressive, riff-driven backings that convey fatigue and drive in equal measure. Maintaining a steady output of recordings, the band has repeatedly incorporated impish electronic touches and shifted through assorted studio methods while retaining their punk framework rooted in the Fall, tracing a path from the 2011 album It Still Rankles to the full-length Wyrd Psearch issued in 2024.
Emerging in the mid-2000s with a garage rock foundation first preserved on the 2007 cassette Between the Wine Shop & the Lido, the group gradually placed greater emphasis on the sung-spoken delivery of vocalist Russell Walker as the core of its songwriting. This evolution led them to pursue experimental detours and tracks featuring restrained electronics on several projects, among them the 2012 release Does This Guy Stack Up?, the 2014 punky Hearts of Gold, and the ultra-limited 2020 set I, Mustard Mitt. Their thirteenth studio album, Wyrd Psearch, arrived in 2024 on the London label Upset the Rhythm.
