The Pipettes emerged from Brighton, England, as a contemporary girl group whose signature polka-dot outfits, synchronized dance moves, and nostalgic aesthetic drew directly from 1960s pop traditions. Local promoter Monster Bobby, born Robert William Barry, assembled the project in 2003 with the explicit aim of recreating the Phil Spector-inspired girl-group sound of that era. An all-male ensemble known as the Cassettes supplied the instrumental foundation, while three visually striking singers—Rebecca Stephens (RiotBecki), Julia Clark-Lowes (the Duchess of Darkness), and Rose Elinor Dougall (Rosay)—handled lead vocals. Throughout 2004 the trio refined its playful and charming stage act with performances in Brighton and London. Early the following year, Clark-Lowes departed and Gwenno Saunders stepped in; the revised lineup then completed three limited-edition singles—“School Uniform,” “ABC,” and “Judy”—that generated underground attention during summer 2005. Memphis Industries, which had gained notice the previous year through the Go! Team, subsequently signed the group.

“Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me” reached the U.K. Top 40 upon its March 2006 release. The full-length We Are the Pipettes appeared that July, prompting Cherrytree Records to license the album for American and Asian markets in 2007. The band also made its South by Southwest debut that year. Momentum faltered in 2008 when both RiotBecki and Rosay exited, leaving none of the original vocalists. Anna McDonald and Ani Saunders joined as replacements, yet McDonald departed months later and Beth Mburu-Bowie took her place. Mburu-Bowie participated in early sessions for the next album before leaving, after which her contributions were excised. The reconstituted lineup recorded Earth vs. the Pipettes with producer Martin Rushent (Human League, Altered Images); Fortuna Pop issued the album in September 2010.
