Scottish melodic rock outfit the Primary 5 operates under the leadership of Paul Quinn, the onetime drummer for Teenage Fanclub and the Soup Dragons, delivering sounds steeped in 1960s and 1970s influences that mirror the approach of those earlier groups. Quinn walked away from Teenage Fanclub in 2001 once four albums had been completed with them, turning his attention instead to writing an initial batch of original material. Working alongside Glaswegian musician Ryan Currie inside the studio run by ex-Oasis bassist Paul "Guiggs" McGuigan, Quinn supplied vocals and handled the majority of instrumental duties on the debut album North Pole, which he issued himself through Bellbeatmusic in 2004. Go surfaced next via Re-Action Records in 2007. Quinn and Currie elected to go their separate ways on amicable terms later the same year. Quinn soon joined forces with Green Peppers guitarist Jim McCulloch to develop further songs. Primary 5’s third album High Five took shape at Leeders Farm Studios, the facility owned by former Darkness guitarist Dan Hawkins, where producer/engineer Nick Brine oversaw the sessions and Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake contributed guest appearances; Neon Tetra Records released the record in 2008. The digital-download-only compilation Revive! - Demos & Rarities - 2001-2008 emerged in 2010.
