Boo Hewerdine, a folk-pop singer and songwriter, made his initial appearance in 1983 as a member of the Great Divide, a band from Cambridge, England. In 1985 he established the Bible, a group that achieved cult status, and with them put out two well-received albums, Walking the Ghost Back Home and Eureka, along with achieving a modest chart success via the single "Honey Be Good," prior to the band's dissolution in 1988. He then partnered with Darden Smith, a performer from Texas, to create the 1989 album Evidence, which garnered positive attention, and this was succeeded by Ignorance in 1992, marking his authentic first solo effort. Following a short-lived reunion of the Bible, Baptist Hospital appeared in 1996, with Thanksgiving coming out three years after that. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s Hewerdine kept a relatively understated profile, though he continued to produce recordings both independently and through partnerships involving the Great Divide, State of the Union, Brooks Williams, and Chris Difford.
