The Prom specializes in poignant piano-based pop marked by emotional depth, fusing the rich, melancholic textures of Elton John’s mid-1970s work with the haunting, fractured ballad style of the Black Heart Procession and the idiosyncratic rhythms of Grandaddy.

Originating in Omaha, Nebraska, vocalist and pianist James Mendenhall along with bassist David Broecker developed their skills amid the city’s expanding indie rock community. After Mendenhall relocated to Seattle in 1995 to attend art school, Broecker followed in 1999 to launch a new project with his longtime collaborator. Mendenhall then recruited fellow student and studio engineer Joel Brown to handle drums, establishing the group.

Their debut album, the lo-fi In This Way They Found Me, appeared on Portland, Oregon’s Panther Fact Records in 2000. The band subsequently performed throughout the region and attracted the attention of Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, who helmed their initial Barsuk outing, the three-track EP Saloon Song.

Following a series of West Coast dates in 2001 alongside Rainer Maria, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, and longtime associates Bright Eyes, the trio joined Death Cab for a nationwide tour. Their second album, Under the Same Stars, arrived the next year, showcasing a refined and cohesive approach along with luminous tracks suited for nocturnal reflection.
