The Quails

The Quails, a politically charged riot grrrl trio based in San Francisco, have appeared at rallies, squats, art galleries, and bookstores. Drummer Julianna Bright, formerly of Electrolettes, guitarist Jen Smith, who organized a traveling punk variety show, and bassist Seth Lorinczi, ex-Circus Lupus, make up the band. They came together in 1999, jointly handling vocals and songwriting, and issued their debut album, We Are the Quails, through Inconvenient Records, the label founded by Erase Errata’s Sara Jaffe. A period of inactivity caused by injuries preceded the 2002 release of their follow-up, Atmosphere. After separate tours supporting Sleater-Kinney and the Aislers Set, the group delivered its third record, The Song Is Love, on Mr. Lady.
