Biography
After Further dissolved toward the end of the 1990s, brothers Brent and Darren Rademaker pursued separate musical paths. Brent launched Beachwood Sparks, whereas Darren formed the Tyde. A Geffen advance intended to launch a new project yielded nothing, prompting Darren to step away from music temporarily. Once inspiration resurfaced, he assembled collaborators and resumed performing. Bassist-turned-guitarist Ben Knight, guitarist-and-later-keyboardist Ann Do, and rotating drummers helped the Tyde establish a presence on the Los Angeles circuit through a blend of classic U.K. indie-pop leanings and sunlit country-rock textures. By the release of the band’s debut, 2001’s Once on The Track & Field Organization, the roster had expanded to include Beachwood Sparks members Brent on bass and vocals, Christopher Gunst on drums, and Farmer Dave Scher on pedal steel guitar and keys, plus a tambourine contribution from the Pink Fairies’ Twink.
Following the 2012 single “Blood Brothers” and the early-2013 EP Go Ask Yr Dad, the Tyde delivered Twice for Rough Trade later that year. The album displayed greater assurance while drawing still deeper from Felt than the debut had already done. Ric Menck of Velvet Crush replaced the prior drummer, and the remainder of the longstanding lineup remained intact. Menck continued into the next release, 2003’s Three’s Co., which again featured the core players along with Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden on one track and the Thrills’ lead vocalist Conor Deasy on another. Apart from an acoustic reading of “Hung Up” for the Madonna tribute Through the Wilderness, the band largely disappeared after that album.
Although occasional live appearances continued, repeated attempts to complete a fourth studio album kept collapsing. When Darren 4 finally emerged on Spiritual Pajamas in 2016, Rademaker had attempted the project four times across four different studios. The record reunited him with brother Brent, guitarists Ben Knight and Colby Buddelmeyer, keyboardist Bobby Rodriguez, drummer Richard Gowen, guitarist Neal Casal, and, on one song, former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, who also contributed vocals.
