Biography
Active in Los Angeles throughout the 1960s, the Vibrations maintained steady performances without achieving major chart success. James Johnson, Carl Fisher, Richard Owens, Dave Govan, and Don Bradley formed the group’s lineup. Recording initially under the name Jayhawks, they later achieved minor novelty success as the Marathons. The tracks “The Watusi” and “Peanut Butter” reached both R&B and pop charts despite limited impact. Adopting the Vibrations moniker in 1964 prompted a shift toward romantic themes, though “My Girl Sloopy” retained elements of their earlier style as their debut hit. Their final notable release came via Okeh in 1968 with “Love in Them There Hills.” Richard Owens spent a short time with the Temptations during 1971, yet the Vibrations persisted until 1976, ultimately performing in nightclubs.
