Based in London, the Wandering Hearts formed an Americana ensemble whose luminous vocal blends, roots-based instrumentation, and melody-focused compositions attracted listeners worldwide. Taking cues from outfits such as the Staves and the Shires, they emerged during the mid-2010s as frontrunners of the fresh British Americana movement. Their first release on the Decca imprint arrived as the 2018 album Wild Silence, after which they logged extensive dates across the United Kingdom and United States, among them an appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. Originally a four-piece, the Wandering Hearts became a trio for their self-titled 2021 release before moving to Chrysalis Records ahead of the 2024 set Mother.

The group’s origins trace to late 2015, when Tara Wilcox and Tim Prottey-Jones crossed paths while performing at one event and quickly bonded over common history. Each brought seasoned credentials: Wilcox operated a dedicated vocal academy after accumulating substantial prior work, and Prottey-Jones contributed skills on multiple instruments plus acting experience. Mutual contacts soon connected them with singer and guitarist A.J. Dean, formerly of the British rock & roll band the Bluejays, and Francesca “Chess” Whiffin, another veteran of musical theater.

Adopting the name Paper Hearts, the musicians cut two early recordings—“Today Is Ours” and “Sunshine”—and posted them on SoundCloud, where they sparked swift attention. Their precise guitar work, uplifting refrains, moody lyrical themes, and tight, honeyed harmonies prompted notices likening them to Fleetwood Mac, an act the band later cited as a primary inspiration alongside First Aid Kit, the Civil Wars, Tom Petty, Simon & Garfunkel, and Cara Dillon. Decca invited them to audition within weeks and offered a contract immediately.

Now operating as the Wandering Hearts, they appeared at prominent festivals throughout 2016 and issued their first single, the bittersweet “Wish I Could,” at the start of 2017. Wild Silence reached stores that September. An expanded edition supplied eight additional tracks, while the group performed at British events such as Latitude, Black Deer, and BST Hyde Park. Country maverick Marty Stuart brought them to the United States, where they became the first British act to make debuts at both the Ryman and the Grand Ole Opry within a single week. Continuing live work while preparing their follow-up—including slots at the C2C Country to Country festival at London’s O2, CMA Fest in Nashville, and support dates for Jack Savoretti—the lineup, now reduced to a trio after Prottey-Jones’s exit, delivered its self-titled second album in 2021, with a deluxe version following in May 2022. The Wandering Hearts subsequently departed Decca for Chrysalis and entered the studio under producer Steve Milbourne. Issued in 2024, the resulting third album Mother—whose title reflected that both Wilcox and Whiffin had become mothers before its appearance—once more highlighted their layered vocal blends and acoustic textures.
