Biography
Hailing from Los Angeles, the Wild Reeds fuse folk and rock through vibrant melodies and dense three-part vocal harmonies. What began as a folk trio evolved once a rhythm section joined, yielding the brighter indie folk approach heard on their second album, the 2014 release Blind and Brave. Their fourth full-length, Cheers, secured the band’s first placement inside the Top 40 of the Billboard independent albums chart.
Sharon Silva, Kinsey Lee, and Mackenzie Howe founded the group and continue to split lead vocal duties; together they self-released the folk-focused Songs for the Morning, Afternoon, and Evening in 2010. Bassist Nick Phakpiseth and drummer Nick Jones later came aboard, widening the sonic palette on the Raymond Richards-produced Blind and Brave. That album became a stepping stone, prompting support tours alongside Langhorne Slim, Noah Gundersen, and Della Mae. After issuing the EP Best Wishes in 2016, the five-piece signed with Nashville-based Dualtone Records. Producer Peter Katis, whose credits include the National and the Swell Season, helmed the resulting label debut The World We Built, which surfaced in early 2017 and reached the Top 25 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart. Dualtone next put out Cheers in March 2019, where it peaked at number 32 on the independent albums chart.
Two EPs arrived in 2020: Covers, containing reworkings of songs from the 1960s and 1970s, and Chairs, which presented acoustic takes on material from Cheers.
