Biography
Hailing from Austin, Texas, the Wind and the Wave came together as a tight-knit duo of longtime friends Dwight Baker and Patricia Lynn, each already seasoned on the local scene before they began performing together in 2009. Lynn previously played in Soldier Thread, while Baker, once a touring musician, stepped away from the road in 2003 to focus on songwriting and production, establishing Matchbox Studios in Austin. Having handled production duties for a pair of Soldier Thread releases, Baker teamed up with Lynn to cut their first album as a duo, From the Wreckage, a sturdy blend of folk, country, and pop. The record caught the attention of RCA Records, which signed the pair in 2013 and issued From the Wreckage during summer 2014, fronted by the lead single “With Your Two Hands.”
RCA promoted the project by landing several tracks on hit television series, resulting in placements on Nashville, Hart of Dixie, The Vampire Diaries, and Grey’s Anatomy. Even so, the label parted ways with the Wind and the Wave, prompting the duo to sign with Island Records. Their debut for the new imprint, Happiness Is Not a Place, arrived in May 2016; the tougher, more rock-driven set quickly climbed to number 20 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.
