Biography
Escondido may call Nashville home, yet the core of Tyler James and Jessica Maros lies in the Western desert. Their dusty yet elegantly dramatic 2013 debut The Ghost of Escondido fuses dream pop with country-rock, evoking the atmospheres of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1990s through touchstones such as Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra, Fleetwood Mac, and Mazzy Star, while also suggesting the cowgirl-era work of Jenny Lewis, all within a dreamy, enveloping panoramic Western pastiche.
Tyler James and Jessica Maros arrived in Nashville on separate paths. Maros, originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, traveled there under a record deal yet turned instead to designing clothes and jewelry. James, who grew up in Iowa, sustained himself as a solo performer until joining the freewheeling collective Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. Once he departed that group, he relocated to Nashville and established a home studio, where the two first connected while he was tracking mutual friend Leanne Ford. Drawn together by shared musical sensibilities, they assembled Escondido, enlisted sympathetic players, and captured their debut album live at the Nashville venue the Casino on October 17, 2011. The sessions emerged in early 2013 as The Ghost of Escondido, drawing notice that included appearances on Conan O’Brien’s TNT program and the NBC series Nashville, along with tweeted acclaim from David Lynch for the track “Black Roses.”
