Biography
The Apache Relay formed in 2008 as an indie folk outfit from Nashville whose pastoral, roots-pop approach took shape while its members studied at Belmont University. Singer and guitarist Michael Ford, Jr. came aboard later, completing an initial lineup anchored by Mike Harris on guitar, Brett Moore handling mandolin and organ, and Kellen Wenrich on fiddle. Teaming with Avett Brothers producer Doug Williams, the quartet issued its first release in 2009, the concept album 1988, which appeared under the billing Michael Ford, Jr. & the Apache Relay.
The 2011 follow-up American Nomad marked the point at which Ford’s name was removed from the group title, leaving simply the Apache Relay. That record built on the foundation laid by 1988, drawing further notice from Paste Magazine and securing high-profile support slots with nu-folk stars Mumford & Sons along with appearances at festivals including Bonnaroo in 2012. Frontman Michael Ford’s younger brother Ben Ford came into the fold around the same period, finalizing the band’s roster.
For their third effort the musicians headed to Los Angeles to work with producer Kevin Augunas, known for his work with the Lumineers and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, at Fairfax Studio. The self-titled album that resulted was released in April 2014.
