Forming the Colorado-rooted singer-songwriter pair known as The Woodys are Dyann and Michael Woody. Their paths first crossed during college in the 1980s, when they shared a lunch date, yet they parted ways until a chance meeting brought them together again a decade afterward in Los Angeles. From that point their bond deepened into marriage in 1993. Rounder released the duo’s debut effort, titled The Woodys, in 1998, presenting tight harmonies derived from the Everly Brothers over loping rhythms in the manner of Buddy Holly and accented by ample Byrdsian jangle. Their next record, Teardrops & Diamonds, appeared on Scena Records in 2004 and followed a comparable blueprint, its standout track being the haunting “Message From Michael,” which drew from an open letter composed by former Byrds drummer Michael Clarke upon recognizing that his death from alcohol abuse was imminent. Through their skilled songwriting and striking vocal blend, Dyann and Michael Woody shine as a distinctive presence in the current Americana landscape.
