Billy Childish, born William Charlie Hamper on 13 December 1958 in Chatham, Kent, England, fronted Thee Mighty Caesars after prior stints with the Pop Rivets and (Thee) Milkshakes. The project followed his conviction that music ought to stay raw and spontaneous, yielding a series of releases whose gritty textures recalled American garage groups and the guitar style of Link Wray, an approach locals labeled the Medway Sound.

Thee Mighty Caesars enlisted the Prisoners, without Mickey Hampshire, resulting in a sound that closely mirrored Childish’s earlier efforts. Beware the Ides of March introduced a modest increase in clarity, a direction that carried into Thee Caesars of Trash and Acropolis Now, the latter supported by members of the girl-group the Delmonas.

Live in Rome combined previously released material with covers of songs by the Damned, Sex Pistols, and Chuck Berry, topped with overdubbed crowd sounds. Wiseblood restored the unvarnished approach of the debut, reflecting Childish’s discomfort with any move toward greater polish; originally issued on Ambassador Records, owned by Wreckless Eric, the album later appeared on his own Hangman Records label, which also handled numerous solo outings, one-off recordings, and collaborations with Medway poet Sexton Ming.

Following the release of the rumbustious John Lennon’s Corpse Revisited, Thee Mighty Caesars paused operations, though Childish maintained the hiatus would end once schedules aligned. Bruce Brand and John Agnew, both former members, next appeared in Thee Headcoats. Childish stepped away from music in 1995 to pursue painting, first performing a farewell London concert backed by all his previous bands, only to resume recording with Thee Headcoats three years later.
