Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Tim Mahoney launched his career fronting the pop/rock band the Blue Meenies before issuing a sequence of solo albums that included Tim Mahoney in 1995, Now in 1997, and Live in 1998. Interest from a major label prompted him to invest heavily in 3 Different Views, released in 2001 and recorded with musicians drawn from John Mellencamp’s band, yet the label ultimately declined the project and the record became his poorest-selling effort to date. Scaling back to a more modest approach, he concentrated on solo acoustic performances, an emphasis reflected on the spare Full Circle, which appeared in 2003. Two years later he delivered Songs We Wish We Wrote. Selection for Target’s Emerging Artist Program followed the February 2007 release of Stay/Leave, an album of original songs that positioned him as the first unsigned artist whose CD was offered for sale in Target outlets. His composition “Theme Song” prevailed in the Ray-Ban Never Hide music contest against thousands of competing entries, securing a September 2007 performance at the Hard Rock Café in Las Vegas during Rolling Stone’s 40th-anniversary events and a feature in the magazine’s November 15, 2007 issue.
