In the 1980s Toni Platão first surfaced on the Brazilian rock scene as a member of Hojerizah. After the band dissolved he launched a solo career that capitalized on his distinctive vocal timbre, a quality uncommon among Brazilian rock acts. Teaming with guitarist Gustavo Corsi from Picassos Falsos, the alter ego project of Hojerizah, Platão shifted toward soul music and delivered his debut solo album Tony Platão in 1994, comprising both original material and songs contributed by other Brazilian rock composers. The follow-up solo effort Calígula Freejack, issued in 2000, fared more strongly by fusing Baden Powell/Vinícius de Moraes’ Afro-samba classic “Canto de Ossanha” with contemporary pop/rock compositions.
