Tony de la Rosa, a seasoned figure in norteño music, stood among the pioneering bandleaders who introduced drums and amplification into the longstanding traditions of conjunto. Born during 1931 in Sarita, Texas, he took up the double-row squeezebox accordion upon reaching age 11. Establishing his own conjunto ensemble around the middle of the 1950s, he proceeded to incorporate electric bass, a 12-string guitar, and drums into the lineup. Such developments gave rise to an emerging style known as tacuachito. Following an extended period of partial retirement, he returned to performing while maintaining his straightforward Tex-Mex approach, channeling his accordion skills toward the widely favored polkas and rancheras along the Texas border region. De la Rosa passed away in June 2004 due to issues arising after heart surgery, at which point he had attained 72 years of age.
