Totonho Villeroy, who composed the Ana Carolina hits "Garganta" and "Tô Saindo," made his first appearance in 1984 in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, staging the show Do Outro Lado da Rua. Drawing on Argentinean tango and African music, he shaped a pop/rock approach that reached wider listeners through the 1991 release of his album Totonho Villeroy, which received the Sharp Prize of Revelation of the MPB. He joined the 1999 compilation CD Porto Alegre Canta Tangos, whose launch in Argentina featured a successful performance later repeated to equal acclaim in Rome, Italy.
