Towa Bird crafts guitar-driven pop songs that stand out for their memorable hooks and forthright explorations of queer romance and selfhood. Attention first arrived through the romantic and instantly engaging tracks “Wild Heart” and “Boomerang,” both of which signaled the arrival of her debut full-length, American Hero, issued in 2024.

Born in Hong Kong, China, in 1999 to a family that is half Filipino and half English, Bird spent her formative years between Thailand and London. She picked up the guitar at twelve and soon immersed herself in classic rock through her father’s vinyl holdings. While still a teenager she assembled her initial group, arriving at Goldsmiths, University of London already comfortable on stage. After two years she withdrew to devote herself fully to music, securing an early foothold by co-writing material for fellow artists. Concurrently she cultivated a dedicated online audience by sharing clips of herself trading solos over contemporary pop and R&B recordings.

Her first official release, the buoyant “Wild Heart,” emerged in April 2023 under the guidance of producer Thom Powers of the Naked and Famous. “Boomerang” followed in June, and both singles paved the way for American Hero, which surfaced that June. In the same period she issued a standalone interpretation of MGMT’s “Time to Pretend.”
