Long before she rose to fame as a television comedian, Tracy Ullman released two albums in the early '80s whose sound evoked the classic girl group style of the 1960s. She interpreted material spanning Doris Day ("Move Over Darling") to Blondie ("[I'm Always Touched by Your] Presence, Dear"), revealing the common threads that connect pop songs across the decades. Her debut, You Broke My Heart in 17 Places, scored a hit throughout the U.K., and she scored an American Top Ten success with a reading of Kirsty MacColl's "They Don't Know." Though it contained several strong tracks, the follow-up, You Caught Me Out, proved less popular and nudged her back to television. By the close of the '80s, The Tracy Ullman Show ranked among America's most acclaimed series, and she has not returned to recording since.
