Biography
In 1958 the siblings Mário Correia José Maria, Regina Correia José Maria, and Eva Correia José Maria—known as Evinha—launched the Trio Esperança at the respective ages of ten, twelve, and seven. Their first radio appearance took place in 1961 on Rádio Mundial (RJ), after which they quickly cut their opening single, Menino do Amendoim (José Messias), for Odeon. The trio’s debut LP, Nós Somos o Sucesso, arrived in 1963 and introduced the hit “Filme Triste,” Romeu Silva’s adaptation of a Loudermilk song. Tracks such as “Festa do Bolinha” (Roberto Carlos/Erasmo Carlos), “Gasparzinho” (Renato Correia), and kindred numbers situated much of their output inside the jovem guarda style. Five LPs had been completed by the time Evinha left for a solo career in 1968. With the later addition of sister Marisa Correia José Maria, seven further LPs and CDs appeared through 1999 while the group maintained a European presence. Over the years their catalog also absorbed a wider range of idioms, among them MPB.
