Hailing from Manchester’s drum and bass community in England, the group formed by London-born Darren Lewis, Manchester native Iyiola Babalola who performs as 2D, and singer Jenna G actually channels the height of acid jazz rather than the scene that first surrounded them. Lewis and 2D initially worked together under the name Future Cut in Manchester, issuing the limited-edition single “Midnight.” The track drew sufficient attention from major labels for the trio to secure a deal with Warner Music, which issued their debut album The Un-Calculated Some in June 2003. The record blended elements of Motown Records, R&B, hip-hop, northern soul, jazz, funk and drum and bass. Reviewers singled out Jenna G’s vocal prowess, drawing positive parallels with US urban singer Lauryn Hill, while also noting the album’s novel take on urban music and its skill at weaving together a broad spectrum of styles.
