Unbunny first surfaced in 1995 through the issuance of the cassette Analog. One year later came another cassette, The Willis Files. Both titles resurfaced on CD in 1997, the former via Tray Full of Lab Mice Records and the latter through Esque Records. Within the lo-fi indie rock trio, guitarist/vocalist Jarid del Dio drew immediate attention for his high-pitched, emotionally raw vocals, while drummer James Ess and guitarist Steve Haruch anchored the lineup. Salt Water Records issued the group’s five-song vinyl single that same year, and 1998 brought Fission Romance the West on Oakland, CA’s Paris Caramel Records; Esque and Two-Ton Santa Records later handled its re-release. Esque followed with the For Nervous Plants EP in 1999. The self-released Book and Roll EP surfaced in 2001, the same year the band briefly adopted the name Nervous Plants for a split release with Milkweed on Two-Ton Santa. After moving from Washington State to Illinois, the group delivered Black Strawberries in October 2002, again on Two-Ton Santa. Snow Tires appeared on Hidden Agenda Records in 2004, with Moon Food following in 2010.
