Biography
Having taken up guitar and piano in childhood, Valdy spent his early years in Ottawa, Ontario, the son of Danish parents. Beginning in the mid-'60s he performed with the London Town Criers, the Prodigal Sons and Blake Emmons. After securing a solo deal with A&M, he cut his debut album Country Man in 1972 and quickly rose to rank as Canada’s second-most popular folk singer after Gordon Lightfoot, thanks to the successive releases Landscapes (1973), Family Gathering (1974), See How the Years Have Gone By (1975) and Valdy & the Hometown Band (1976). Four further A&M projects appeared: Hot Rocks (1978), Passport: Best of Valdy (1979), 1001 (1980) and Valdy’s Kids Record (1982). Following the 1985 Duke Street album Notes from Places, he moved to Oak Street Music for the 1993 release Heart at Work and has also worked with Max Bennett and Bob Ruzicka.
