Biography
Samuel van Dijk, a Dutch producer now based in Helsinki, works under several guises that span steely electro-techno as VC-118A, aquatic dub techno as Mohlao, and isolationist ambient as Multicast Dynamics.
Born in Friesland, he later settled in Amsterdam and developed close ties with Boris Bunnik (Conforce) and Niels Luinenburg (Delta Funktionen), connections that eventually placed all three artists on the Delsin roster. Early influences such as Deepchord, Drexciya, Vladislav Delay, Murcof, and Rhythm & Sound guided his path, and although he began with software tools, he soon shifted to a setup built primarily around hardware.
VC-118A, whose name references the Douglas Liftmaster that served as President John F. Kennedy’s Air Force One, was in reality his second alias; Mohlao had already appeared three years prior in 2009. The first VC-118A release arrived in 2012 with the Trust single “Information System,” a spacious and disorienting cut that carried over some of Mohlao’s dub character while adding an electro edge through vintage drum machines and sharp acidic accents. That same year he issued his debut album, International Airlines, on Lunar Disko, a record whose forward drive remained measured beneath a tense, shadowy atmosphere.
The following year van Dijk relocated to Tampere, Finland, where the stark winter terrain and absence of any surrounding scene prompted the launch of Multicast Dynamics. Elements of that project’s glacial quality surfaced again on the second VC-118A album, Shift Register, which Tabernacle released in 2016; the record merged electro with glitch and IDM touches and received acclaim for its melodic sophistication and emotional range. After several further Multicast Dynamics outings and the long-awaited appearance of Mohlao’s debut album Landforms in 2017, van Dijk moved south to Helsinki and completed the third VC-118A full-length, Inside. Issued by Delsin in 2019, the album presented the most direct electro sound of any release in the series.
