Biography
Given that his sibling Lee Jones had already earned favorable notice for an initial Hefner release on the admired West London label Inertia, Russ Jones confronted considerable pressure when delivering his own album-length statement to the same imprint. The first cut on his debut full-length Musings of Monsieur Malloy, titled “Trying,” distilled his approach by weaving references that stretched from Duke Ellington to Joni Mitchell into atmospheric scores for the present-day beatnik, suspending rhythms within sweeping sonic vistas while delicate string accents anchored the more open-ended instrumental lines to the central pulse.
