Biography
Warren Bernhardt established himself as a distinctive pianist whose approach, though shaped by Bill Evans, retained a clearly personal character and allowed him to work across an unusually wide range of contexts over several decades. After pursuing classical training, he performed throughout Chicago during his college years and then joined Paul Winter’s sextet, remaining with the group from 1961 through 1964. Once he relocated to New York, Bernhardt worked alongside Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry, George Benson, and Jeremy Steig while also serving as a studio musician on numerous pop sessions. In 1976 he became a member of Jack DeJohnette’s Directions, later appearing with Steps Ahead from 1984 to 1985 and regularly leading his own trios. He additionally cut several acclaimed albums for DMP. Warren Bernhardt died on August 19, 2022, at the age of 83.
