Biography
Born in Shenzhen in southern China during 1998, pianist Wei Luo displayed prodigious gifts within her homeland by mastering advanced concertos and securing victories in youth contests both domestically and abroad before adolescence. Russian virtuoso repertoire held particular appeal for her.
Musical curiosity surfaced at age four, leading to a recital debut at six in nearby Hong Kong. At ten she appeared with the Shanghai Philharmonic, returning in 2011 for Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26, a score that has remained central to her programs. Several Chinese youth prizes preceded her 2010 achievements: first prize at the 11th Chopin International Competition for Young Pianists in Poland and second place at the second Rachmaninov International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Frankfurt, Germany.
She entered Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music at thirteen, where early American engagements included a Herbst Hall recital in San Francisco, appearances at New York’s Mostly Mozart Festival, and repeated participation in the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Studies with Gary Graffman and Robert McDonald continued alongside performances. A 2015 Philadelphia Inquirer critic observed that she “immerses herself in the music with an intensity that borders on madness.”
The Gilmore Young Artist Award arrived in 2018, followed by her Steinway Hall debut in New York during the 2018-2019 season. WQXR named her to its “19 for ’19” list, citing her “pyrotechnical virtuosity.” Her range spans Beethoven to Rodion Shchedrin and includes the major concertos of Beethoven, Rachmaninov, and Prokofiev. Signed to Decca Gold, she issued her self-titled debut album in August 2019, featuring works by Haydn, Ravel, Prokofiev, Shchedrin, and Shostakovich.
