Wellwater Conspiracy operates as a three-piece featuring drummer Ted Dameron, vocalist Zeb, and guitarist John Paul McBain. The initial pair operate under pseudonyms belonging to ex-Soundgarden members Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd. Former Monster Magnet guitarist John Paul McBain rounds out the lineup and helps the trio shatter assumptions about how a Soundgarden/Monster Magnet collaboration ought to sound. Sabbath-style riffing might be predicted, yet the debut Declaration of Conformity steers clear of any grinding metal.

The musicians first assembled inside the side project Hater, which added two further players and delivered an album via A&M in 1993. Hater occasionally mirrors Wellwater Conspiracy sonically but never reaches equivalent depth or focus. Certain listeners may brand the sound “lo-fi,” though the recordings display inventive studio choices that generate numerous distinctive yet classic textures.

Shortly after the debut appeared, Matt Cameron accepted Pearl Jam’s vacant drum slot. Observers expected the move to finish Wellwater Conspiracy, yet Cameron sustained the band. Brotherhood of Electric: Operational Directives emerged in 1999 without Ben Shepherd’s participation, leaving Cameron to cover vocals alongside drumming. The Scroll and Its Combinations arrived in 2001 as the first Wellwater Conspiracy release on a major label, TVT. The album earned favorable press and spotlighted guests Eddie Vedder (credited as Wes C. Adle) and Kim Thayil, with Shepherd returning for several tracks.
