Biography
Maori vocalist Whirimako Black launched the group Tuahine Whakairo during 1991, yet departed two years afterward to launch an independent path. In the opening years of the following decade she issued multiple recordings, among them 2001’s Hine Pukohurangi: Shrouded in the Mist, 2002’s Hohou Te Rongo: Cultivate Peace, 2004’s Tangihaku, 2005’s Kura Huna, and 2006’s Soul Sessions. That first release earned the 2001 New Zealand Music Award for Best Maori Language Album. She both wrote and performed the theme music for the TVNZ series The New Zealand Wars while also sharing songwriting credit on the signature tune of the Maori news broadcast Te Karere.
