Born and raised in Tennessee, Will Hoge merges soulful Americana with heartland rock & roll through his songwriting. Known for his perceptive eye on everyday heartland experiences, he crafts both expansive anthems such as "Middle of America," featured on 2015's Small Town Dreams, and deeply personal portraits like "Strong" from 2013's Never Give In, delivering each with comparable craft and sincerity. Following earlier records that leaned into his rock & roll leanings, the 2024 release Tenderhearted Boys marked a reflective turn in which Hoge performed nearly every instrument on his own.

After growing up in the Nashville suburb of Franklin, Will Hoge moved away from Tennessee to pursue a history degree at Western Kentucky University. Drawn back by music, he settled once more in Nashville and formed a band featuring Dan Baird, the former frontman of Georgia Satellites. He honed his skills on the Southern club circuit and put out a live recording, 1999's All Night Long, before securing a contract with Atlantic Records.

Supported by the label, he tracked his proper debut, Carousel, at Memphis' Ardent Studios alongside engineer John Hampton, whose credits include the Replacements and Gin Blossoms. The album appeared in 2000, and Blackbird on a Lonely Wire arrived in 2003, though without Baird, who had exited amid the group's heavy touring demands. Dissatisfied with Hoge's commercial performance, Atlantic offered little promotion, prompting him to request his release and operate independently.

Once free from Atlantic, Hoge maintained a rigorous touring pace while issuing a series of self-released projects that ranged from live sets and short EPs to the full studio album 2006's The Man Who Killed Love. Impressed by his tireless schedule of more than 200 shows annually, Rykodisc offered a deal, resulting in Draw the Curtains, his fourth studio effort and first for the label, which surfaced in October 2007 and was followed by another intensive fall tour. Work on the next record began in 2008 yet halted on August 20 after a scooter accident left Hoge seriously injured. He devoted the rest of that year to recovery through extended physical therapy, resumed the sessions in 2009, and issued The Wreckage later the same year. His seventh studio album, the aptly named Number Seven, came out in September 2011.

Hoge and co-writer Eric Paslay earned 2012 nominations from the Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, and Grammy Awards in the Best Country Song category for "Even If It Breaks Your Heart," the opening cut on the Eli Young Band's Life at Best. In December 2012 he issued the digital-only EP Modern American Protest Music, containing the tracks "Folded Flag" and "Ballad of Trayvon Martin." October 2013 brought Never Give In, his eighth studio album on Cumberland Recordings, whose lead single "Strong" was licensed for Chevy's 2014 Silverado truck campaign. Small Town Dreams followed in 2015 and reached number 15 on the country charts.

While touring behind Small Town Dreams, Hoge encountered a creative impasse. Although he continued to enjoy writing for other artists and performing live, his enthusiasm for leading a band had waned. After thoughtful reflection he disbanded his group and embarked on a solo cross-country trek. Rediscovering the initial spark that had drawn him to music, he began composing on the road. He returned to the studio with a select group of session musicians and finished Anchors. Previewed in June 2017 by the single "Little Bit of Rust," a duet with Sheryl Crow, and followed shortly afterward by "Baby's Eyes," the self-produced 11-track collection appeared that August on Eldo, the imprint Hoge established for his releases and distributed through Thirty Tigers. He quickly issued My American Dream in October 2018. 2020's Tiny Little Movies offered a wide-ranging set that balanced intimate reflections on failed relationships with pointed critiques of political and spiritual hypocrisy. 2022's Wings on my Shoes leaned heavily into Hoge's Americana and heartland rock roots, closing with the rambling guitar-and-pedal-steel narrative "Whose God Is This." For 2024's Tenderhearted Boys he pursued a minimalist, understated approach, handling nearly all the instrumental duties himself.
