Wilma Vritra formed as a cross-continental partnership joining West Coast hip-hop artist Hal Williams, who records as Pyramid Vritra, with British producer and composer Wilma Archer. On the pair’s first album together, the 2019 release Burd, Williams’ candid and reflective verses ride Archer’s rich, flowing backdrops that weave in funk, jazz, and gospel textures.

Williams belongs to Jet Age of Tomorrow, the jazz-leaning hip-hop project tied to Odd Future and completed by Matt Martians of the Internet; under the Pyramid Vritra name he has also put out multiple solo albums, mixtapes, and EPs, among them the 2014 Stones Throw title Indra. Archer, who has issued his own work as Slime and performed live with Vondelpark, has produced or remixed tracks for Jessie Ware, Amber Mark, Jeremiah Jae, Lianne La Havas, and additional artists.

The two first linked up remotely in 2017 when Archer supplied beats to support Williams’ writing on themes of depression and societal unrest. Archer later traveled to Los Angeles to oversee most of the recording sessions, after which finishing touches were added in London. Bad Taste Records, the U.K. label, issued Burd in 2019.
