In the Los Angeles rap landscape, Maxo distinguishes himself through a singular approach that fuses lo-fi beats, distorted samples, and reflective verses chronicling ordinary routines. His introduction arrived with the 2015 mixtape After Hours, which secured a Def Jam contract and led to the label releases LIL BIG MAN in 2019 and Even God Has a Sense of Humor in 2023, after which he issued Debbie's Son independently later that year.

Born and raised in Los Angeles as Maxamillian Allen, he absorbed hip-hop throughout his upbringing. His brother's activities as an MC prompted Maxo to begin writing rhymes as an outlet for navigating daily hardships. While attending college, he partnered with a classmate to assemble After Hours, whose dusty, sample-heavy aesthetic delivered diary-style flows in stark contrast to the glossy beats and explicit themes dominating mainstream rap. The follow-up mixtape SMILE surfaced in 2018, prompting his Def Jam deal. LIL BIG MAN arrived the next year, with SWARVY and lastnamedavid supplying production that moved beyond earlier lo-fi textures while preserving the unusual samples and accounts of everyday existence.

A revelatory visit to Senegal alongside his mother prompted a renewed outlook after his return, yet four years elapsed before Even God Has a Sense of Humor appeared in early 2023. The project drew lyrical material from both that overseas journey and his ongoing personal experiences. Toward year's end, he released Debbie's Son on his own Smileforme label after exiting Def Jam, recruiting Beat Butcha, the Alchemist, and longtime collaborator lastnamedavid for the beats.
