Jay Worthy

In partnerships ranging from LNDN DRGS associate Sean House to Harry Fraud and the Alchemist, Jay Worthy gravitates toward unhurried, mid-paced beats drawn from the laid-back yet groovy side of late-1970s and early-1980s R&B. Such instrumentals complement his unhurried delivery when recounting street experiences, an approach documented across an extensive catalog dominated by shorter releases like the 2017 G-Worthy team-up with G Perico and Cardo, the same-year Fantasy Island alongside the Alchemist, 2021’s Two4Two, and 2022’s 2 P’z in a Pod with Larry June. As the other half of LNDN DRGS he has issued material stretching from P on the Drugs through Burnout 4, while 2023 saw the arrival of Nothing Bigger Than the Program, a joint effort with Roc Marciano.

Worthy’s childhood visits to California eventually became permanent in his late teens, shaped by Ice Cube and additional West Coast trailblazers of that era. Serious engagement with rap only followed his alliance with producer Sean House under the LNDN DRGS banner, culminating in a 2015 EP that also featured early champion A$AP Yams along with G Perico and Chuck Inglish. In 2016 he created Bompton, a six-part Vice channel documentary centered on Compton. Early 2017 brought P on the Boards, another LNDN DRGS EP dedicated to Yams, after which Worthy and the Alchemist delivered the seven-track Fantasy Island later that year. Through the remainder of the decade further projects accumulated, among them G-Worthy with Perico and Cardo plus LNDN DRGS outings such as Active, Brain on DRGS, Umbrella Symphony, and Affiliated.

The 2020s have seen no slowdown. Between 2020 and 2021 alone, Worthy put out the solo Two4One and Two4Two, the Harry Fraud collaboration Eat When You’re Hungry Sleep When You’re Tired, LNDN DRGS’ Burnout 4, and The Ballad of a Dopehead recorded with T.F and Budgie. One of his more prominent guest spots arrived when he appeared on Isaiah Rashad’s “True Story.” Three joint ventures emerged in 2022: 2 P’z in a Pod with Larry June, You Take the Credit, We’ll Take the Check once more with Harry Fraud, and What They Hittin 4 alongside DJ Muggs. Nothing Bigger Than the Program with Roc Marciano followed in 2023.
