Biography
Jay 305 operates in West Coast gangsta rap even though his stage name references the Miami area code tied to the four years he spent there after turning 11, a stretch during which he dodged gang members intent on ending his life. Back in South Central he reconnected with longtime associates such as Joe Moses and forged new ties including one with Dom Kennedy, who placed him on the Interscope-affiliated imprint Other People's Money and thereby enabled projects such as the 2017 album Taking All Bets. Kennedy also contributed to the 2024 EP Don't Wait Until I Die.
Early on, the track "Youzza Flip" appeared on the label's 2012 compilation Young Nation and surfaced as a standalone single the following year. Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa joined the remix before a weapons charge sent 305 to jail for several months. Freed in 2014, he appeared with YG on Blame It on the Streets and landed a guest spot on DJ Mustard's album 10 Summers that same year. In 2015 he rejoined Joe Moses for the single "Thuggin'," which closed out the Inner City Hero LP issued that year and featured Dom Kennedy, K Camp, Suga Free, Joshua Mock, and Ty Dolla $ign. The next year brought the single "Yuck It Up," while 2017 saw the arrival of "When You Say" with Omarion; both cuts later surfaced on Taking All Bets. Released in July 2017, the album marked one of his most prominent efforts to that point and included contributions from Travis Scott along with several other notable artists.
Afterward he concentrated on singles for several years, issuing tracks such as "You Too Much" in 2020 and "Hard Times Don't Last" in 2022. Multiple collaborations with producer Hit-Boy and Dom Kennedy were collected on the 2024 EP Don't Wait Until I Die.
