Emerging in the mid-2010s, Oakland rapper Kamaiyah revived the sonic palette of the 1990s by pairing hardcore lyrics with relaxed assurance and spirited edge. Over dense rhythms and throwback production she established a presence in the Bay Area underground, then issued her widely praised debut mixtape A Good Night in the Ghetto in 2016. After bureaucratic delays at a major label stalled further output, she worked independently and enlisted Sada Baby and Cash Kidd for the hard-hitting 2022 EP Divine Timing.

Kamaiyah Jamesha Johnson was born in Oakland, California, and raised in Sacramento, where her listening habits included Missy Elliot, TLC, Conscious Daughters, and Aaliyah. Those influences of hip-hop-inflected R&B and rhyme-driven rap shaped the style she first presented through the Oakland collective the Big Money Gang. In 2015 she stepped out solo with the regional hit “How Does It Feel,” which drew notice from leading music outlets and NPR. Capitalizing on the momentum, she dropped her debut album A Good Night in the Ghetto in early 2016. The project earned strong critical response and led to collaborations with YG and Drake, touring alongside the former, and a short-lived deal with Interscope Records. When no release appeared under that imprint, she independently issued her sophomore mixtape Before I Wake in 2017, a concise statement reflecting on her personal and professional circumstances at the time.

After parting ways with Interscope in 2018 she focused on new material and released Got It Made on her own GRND.WRK label, an assertive effort featuring J. Espinosa alongside spiritual and stylistic predecessor Trina. In 2020 Kamaiyah joined fellow Bay Area rapper Capolow for the collaborative EP Oakland Nights and also put out the No Explanations mixtape, which included appearances by Mozzy and Jackboy. Her Divine Timing EP arrived in 2022 via Keep It Lit Records; the seven-track, West Coast bass-heavy set contained guest spots from DaBoii, Sada Baby, and Cash Kidd.
