Biography
Bay Area rapper and producer P-Lo initially built his reputation by shaping tracks behind the scenes for numerous performers before his own magnetic stage presence and energetic, classic-leaning sound pushed him forward. After handling production duties alongside Yo Gotti, Wiz Khalifa, Sage the Gemini, and many additional artists, he reached fresh listeners through the 2017 single “Put Me on Something,” a sleek West Coast rap cut that included a verse from E-40. He kept generating beats for others while steadily dropping his own material, including the 2019 album Shine and the 2022 release Stunna.
Raised in the suburbs of California’s East Bay, Paolo Rodriguez began crafting beats during his high-school years in the early 2000s. Even before finishing school, Rodriguez grew increasingly absorbed in hip-hop circles. In 2008 he helped establish the HBK Gang, also called the Heartbreak Gang, a crew of producers, rappers, and video directors that eventually encompassed more than ten highly active participants. By then he had adopted the performing name P-Lo and was supplying beats for HBK Gang affiliates and additional acts. In 2013 he delivered the well-received mixtape MBMGC 2 and created the instrumental for Yo Gotti’s modest hit “Act Right.” As his profile rose in both roles, P-Lo secured higher-visibility partnerships, collaborating frequently with mainstream star Wiz Khalifa while also producing for Flo Rida, Iamsu!, Sage the Gemini, and others. In 2017, after numerous mixtapes and smaller productions, he issued his first proper full-length, More Than Anything, a sizable set of club-oriented cuts that included appearances by G-Eazy, Kool John, and E-40. The follow-up album Prime arrived in 2018 and contained the successful track “Same Squad.” P-Lo came back in June 2019 with the EP Somthin’ Light, highlighted by the Jay Anthony-assisted cut “Hella Fun.” Later that year he released the full-length Shine, which featured guest spots from Dom Kennedy, Mozzy, Kehlani, and additional artists. Several singles appeared over the following years, leading to the 2022 album Stunna. That project showcased more of the bright, bass-driven production style P-Lo had become recognized for, with contributions from Larry June, Michael Sneed, Oakland rap legend Too $hort, and others. A deluxe edition of Stunna added bonus material in 2023, and P-Lo has continued to issue fresh singles.
