Biography
Led by vocalist and composer Tamsin Wilson, Wilsen shapes introspective indie rock through rich, closely woven sonic environments. The group issued its first album under label auspices with the 2013 release Sirens. For the band’s third studio album, the 2020 set Ruiner, sessions were overseen by Andrew Sarlo, a frequent collaborator with Big Thief.
Born in London, England, Tamsin Wilson assembled Wilsen alongside guitarist Johnny Simon and bassist Drew Arndt during their time as students at Berklee College of Music in Boston. After completing their studies, the three musicians relocated to New York. They initially put out their debut album Sirens themselves before Secret City Records reissued it in 2013. The EP Magnolia appeared the following year, and a 2015 collection of Magnolia remixes included contributions from Wye Oak, White Hinterland, and additional artists. Also in 2015, Wilsen appeared on Wye Oak’s remix of the Honne track “Coastal Love,” and the trio performed at the South by Southwest festival for the first time.
Produced by the band together with Ben Baptie, whose credits include Cage the Elephant and Laura Mvula, the second full-length I Go Missing in My Sleep came out in 2017. Wilsen subsequently worked again with producer, engineer, and mixer Andrew Sarlo, whose résumé lists Bon Iver and Big Thief, to create Ruiner, which Secret City and Dalliance Recordings issued in early 2020.
