Biography
During 2008, as San Francisco's the Fresh & Onlys prepared Grey-Eyed Girls and Play It Strange, guitarist Wymond Miles devoted spare hours to songwriting on his eight-track Tascam recorder at home. Influences such as Scott Walker, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Robert Wyatt shaped the material, which he performs and records solo yet renders as thick, melancholic layers of guitars, drums, bass, synth, and dreamy vocals drenched in cathedral reverb. Although recording and touring with the Fresh & Onlys consumed the bulk of his schedule, 2012 brought the release of his debut EP Earth Has Doors, soon followed by the full-length Under the Pale Moon. Sacred Bones issued both projects, and the label also handled his next effort, the swiftly finished 2013 album Cut Yourself Free. Miles divided work on the subsequent record between his home studio and sessions with producer Phil Manley at El Studio in San Francisco. Departing from earlier psychedelic and new wave leanings, 2016's Call by Night relied chiefly on piano—the first such instance for Miles—and explored an expanded palette that included sea shanties, expansive ballads, and gospel. Sacred Bones released the album in July.
