Nick Zammuto balanced his role in the sonic collage duo the Books with separate recordings issued under his own name that blended computer processing and guitar in an experimental vein, a project that eventually grew into a complete electronic art-pop ensemble. Early solo work such as the 2000 release Willscher remained rooted in abstract electronics, whereas the 2012 album Zammuto shifted toward intricate, melody-driven constructions paired with disorienting vocal lines.

His initial outings, among them the 1998 triple CD-R Solutiore of Stareau and the full-length Willscher from 2000, emphasized atmospheric, hypnotic textures laced with glitch elements. Collaboration in the Books, which he established alongside Paul de Jong in 2000, gradually prompted him to integrate live instrumentation into his own material. Following a pause devoted to the Books’ The Way Out, he resurfaced on Temporary Residence with a self-titled album. For that 2012 effort Zammuto assembled a four-piece rock configuration, handling guitar himself alongside bassist Mikey Zammuto, drummer Sean Dixon, and multi-instrumentalist Gene Back. The record earned widespread critical praise, prompting extensive touring that year alongside Gotye, Explosions in the Sky, and Lymbyc Systym. A follow-up album, Anchor, arrived in 2014 and adopted a more open sonic approach that featured guest vocals from Snowblink singer Daniela Gesundheit. An EP titled Veryone appeared in 2016. In 2018 Nick composed the score for the American drama film We the Animals, directed by Jeremiah Zager.
