Born Christy Campbell on March 29, 1981, in Guadeloupe, French West Indies, French dancehall singer Admiral T grew up with a deep admiration for the foundational reggae of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh while absorbing sounds that stretched across Caribbean zouk, salsa, and traditional African music. At 16 he entered the DJ collective Karukéra Sound System, appearing on its 1997 LP Rapide before landing a hit with “Gwadada” in 2000. Midway through 2003 he left KSS to launch a solo career, shaping his debut album Mozaik Kreyol around the essence of his Creole roots. First issued by the West Indian label Don’s Music, the project became a cult favorite and received a re-release on Universal in autumn 2004. After playing a lead role in Jean-Claude Flammand’s 2005 film Nèg Maron, he released his second album, Toucher l’Horizon, the following year. He returned to the screen in 2009 for Flammand’s next feature, Le Mur du Silence. His third album, Instinct Admiral, arrived in 2010, followed by Face B in 2012.
