Agnez Mo advanced from early fame as a youthful performer to rank among Indonesia's most prominent public figures, securing recognition as a singer-songwriter and actress by pursuing ongoing artistic shifts across multiple phases. She put out a set of three children's albums in the mid-'90s, then adopted the Agnes Monica identity to explore R&B and hip-hop during the 2000s, releasing another three albums highlighted by the popular Whaddup A..'?! in 2005. Rebranding once more as Agnez Mo, she launched her first English-language effort for worldwide listeners, X, in 2017.

Born Agnes Monica Muljoto in Jakarta, she entered recording at age six in the early '90s with Si Meong. Yess! followed as her second album in 1995, with Bala-Bala completing the children's trilogy. Though these releases achieved only modest commercial impact, they sustained her visibility and opened doors to acting in youth dramas and soap operas such as Lupus Millenia, Mr. Hologram, and Pernikahan Dini. The final series initiated her move toward mature material in her late teens, drawing vocal style from American R&B artists including Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Fantasia, Lauryn Hill, and Brandy.

Her return to music came in 2003 through And the Story Goes, which merged ballads with a youthful fusion of hip-hop and pop/rock production. The project attained multi-platinum certification throughout Southeast Asia and brought multiple honors to the singer, still billed as Agnes Monica, among them Best Female Newcomer. Whaddup A..'?! followed with even stronger sales, enabling Muljoto to broaden her profile into Taiwan via co-starring roles in two soap operas. Her third adult album, and sixth overall, appeared in 2009 on longtime label Aquarius Musikindo. Sacredly Agnezious amplified the assured and dynamic approach developed across the prior pair of releases, layering in sultry vocals and synth-driven production akin to contemporary work by Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and Kelly Clarkson. She ended the Agnes Monica chapter with the greatest-hits collection Agnes Is My Name, which assembled twelve singles ranging from the 2001 soundtrack track "Pernikahan Dini" to 2009's "Janji-Janji." Between projects she joined the judging panel on Indonesian Idol and signed with Sony to target a larger international audience.

Reappearing as Agnez Mo in 2014, she issued a self-titled English-language album in Indonesia to preview her refreshed sound. After favorable response she entered the studio with American producers. International growth began with the 2014 trap-rap single "Coke Bottle" featuring Timbaland and T.I., released via Sony/The Cherry Party. The next year she delivered the Kesha-esque "Boy Magnet," supported by a dance-remix EP. While preparing the next Agnez Mo album she took judging roles for one season each of The Voice Indonesia and The Voice Kids Indonesia. In 2017 she redirected attention to music with the single "Long as I Get Paid," which exposed a more explicit and hard-edged facet. The track landed on her first official international album, X, issued in late 2017. Packed with hip-hop attitude, trap beats, and seductive R&B, X was produced by Timbaland associates Danja (Britney Spears, Keri Hilson, Ciara) and Jim Beanz (JoJo, Chris Brown, Demi Lovato). Muljoto soon returned to the studio with Chris Brown to record the passionate duet "Overdose," which appeared in 2018.
