Biography
AKB48 operates as an all-female Japanese collective that fuses theatrical performance with musical output while emphasizing pop's upbeat and endearing qualities. Yasushi Akimoto, the well-known producer, launched the act, with AKB standing for Akihabara—the Tokyo neighborhood that houses their dedicated theater for daily shows—and the numeral 48 originally signaling the intended headcount of this expansive lineup, even though the figure functions mainly as a rough estimate. Their recorded introduction arrived via the 2008 compilation Set List: Greatest Songs 2006-2007, which gathered earlier stage material, after which the ensemble claimed the top spot on the Japanese album chart with their initial full-length studio effort, 2010's Kamikyokutachi. By 2018 they had secured an eighth consecutive number-one album in the form of Bokutachi Wa, Ano Hi No Yoake Wo Shitteiru, maintaining their pattern of bright, inviting J-pop; a succession of non-album singles followed at the summit, among them 2018's "Teacher Teacher," 2019's "Sustainable," and 2023's "Doushitemo Kimi Ga Suki Da" ("I Really Like You").
Akimoto formed AKB48 in 2005 through an audition that drew 8,000 entrants and yielded 20 members who first appeared onstage that year as Team A. The following year he partnered with a telecommunications company to stage the first mobile-phone-submission audition worldwide, attracting nearly 12,000 applicants and producing 18 new members for Team K, while Team B debuted later in the same year. The group's first single, "Sakura No Hanabiratachi" (2006), achieved respectable independent sales, and the third release, "Aitakatta," also from 2006, led to a contract with DefStar Records, a Sony Music subsidiary.
"Seifuku Ga Jama Wo Suru" climbed to number seven in 2007, marking a new peak, and the follow-up Top Ten entry "Keibetsu Shiteita Aijou" addressed school bullying. Throughout that busy year the act issued six compilation albums—three from Team A and three from Team K—plus seven stage DVDs from those same units, while several members appeared in the film Densen Uta and the full roster performed on the widely viewed program Kohaku Uta Gassen. Team B issued its own DVD in 2008, the same year the group assembled Set List: Greatest Songs 2006-2007, which reached Japan's Top 30 (a 2010 reissue later peaked at number two). Frequent membership shifts occurred as various performers graduated, yet AKB48 pressed on with 2008 singles that included the Top Three "10nen Zakura" and ultimately scored their first Japanese number-one single in 2009 with "River," drawn from the chart-topping Kamikyokutachi, their debut proper studio album issued on King Records in April 2010.
Over the ensuing decade the group repeatedly topped both the singles and albums charts. Their second album, Koko ni Ita Koto, reached number one in June 2011, and 1830m repeated the feat in August 2012. Tsugi No Ashiato returned them to the summit in January 2014, supported by seven preceding number-one singles that featured the standout "Sayonara Crawl," after which Koko Ga Rhodes Da, Koko De Tobe! earned triple-platinum status in January 2015. Zero to Ichi no Aida, their sixth studio album from November 2015, incorporated the chart-topping "Bokutachi Wa Tatakawanai," while Thumbnail in January 2017 spotlighted the orchestrated adult-contemporary track "Tsubasa Wa Iranai," issued in multiple versions like many of their hits. Bokutachi Wa, Ano Hi No Yoake Wo Shitteiru became their eighth straight Japanese number-one album in January 2018.
Several years passed before another full-length project appeared, though King Records continued to deliver chart-topping singles such as 2018's "Teacher Teacher" and 2019's "Sustainable." October 2022's "Hisashiburi No Lip Gloss," logged as the band's 60th single, still ascended to number one, and "Doushitemo Kimi Ga Suki Da" followed in early 2023.
