Biography
A dozen performers hailing from South Korea and Japan, Iz*One established themselves with catchy, movement-driven pop. The ensemble took shape in 2018 during the members’ participation in Mnet’s Produce 48 competition, after which their first EP, Color*Iz, reached the runner-up slot on the Gaon album rankings. A string of well-received EPs preceded their inaugural full-length release, Bloom*Iz, which appeared in 2020.
Seoul-based Off the Record Entertainment oversees the twelve artists: leader/lead vocalist/main dancer Eunbi (Eun-bi Kwon), vocalist Sakura (Sakura Miyawaki), rapper/vocalist Hyewon (Hye-won Kang), main rapper/lead vocalist/lead dancer Yena (Ye-na Choi), main dancer/lead vocalist/lead rapper Chaeyeon (Chae-yeon Lee), lead vocalist/lead dancer Chaewon (Chae-won Kim), lead rapper/vocalist Minju (Min-ju Kim), vocalist Nako (Nako Yabuki), lead dancer/vocalist/rapper Hitomi (Hitomi Honda), main vocalist Yuri (Yu-ri Jo), lead vocalist/lead dancer Yujin (Yu-jin An), and lead dancer/vocalist/rapper Wonyoung (Won-young Jang). These twelve stood out as the most accomplished contestants among the ninety-six who entered Produce 48 in August 2018. Their debut EP, Color*Iz, subsequently peaked at number two in South Korea and number one in Japan; it featured the track “La Vie en Rose,” which entered the South Korean Top Ten and registered at number six on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. Capitalizing on that momentum, the group closed the year by collecting the New Artist of the Year trophy at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, the Golden Disc Awards, and the Seoul Music Awards.
Iz*One issued their first Japanese single, “Suki to Iwasetai,” in February 2019. Their sophomore EP, Heart*Iz, followed that April and contained the song “Violeta”; the set climbed to number one in South Korea, number five in Japan, and number six on the Billboard World Digital Albums chart. In June 2019 the ensemble mounted its initial Eyes on Me concert series in Seoul while preparing a full-length debut and an accompanying concert film. After a postponement stemming from an inquiry into Produce 48 staff, the group resurfaced in February 2020 with Bloom*Iz and its single “Fiesta.” The Oneiric Diary EP surfaced several months afterward in June.
